Six Tips to Stay Warm on Winter Rides

Winter is a challenging time for cycling. Short days and unpredictable, cold conditions can make it tempting to spend the season riding indoors. But it also holds many rewards for those willing to brave the elements. To help, we’ve put together our top tips for navigating winter warmly. Read on to learn how to make the most of every chilly mile.

Tip 1: Route Wisely

In summer, when the weather’s warm and days seem endless, it can be easy to spend seven or eight hours exploring new roads—but winter is a different story. Less daylight and the discomfort that comes with cold require a more strategic approach to route planning.  

 

Check the forecast and look for good weather windows. Aim for shorter distances, more frequently, to build up base miles in a more manageable way. And if you plan to ride in the mountains, seek roads and trails on the sunnier side of the slopes (south-facing for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere and vice versa).  

 

Tip 2: Layer Appropriately

 As temperatures, elevations, and efforts climb during the day, it’s crucial that your kit can keep up. Smart layering is the key to staying comfortable throughout the ups and downs of winter cycling. Prioritize layers that are breathable, insulating—and easy enough to pack away when no longer needed.

Tip 3: See and Be Seen

As with route planning, the shorter days of winter also demand a strategic approach to rider visibility. Plan to bring both front and rear lights—always checking that batteries are fully charged before departing. And keep in mind that cold weather can affect overall battery life.

Tip 5: Ride, Refuel, Repeat

You might think that sweating less on winter rides makes rehydration less important—but it’s still just as crucial to stay properly fueled when it’s cold outside. Well-hydrated muscles are more metabolically active—which, in turn, keep your body warmer. Likewise, your body needs calories to function at its fullest potential, so eat high-energy foods throughout your ride. 

 

Lastly, treat yourself to a mid-ride coffee stop—or bring a warm drink with you on the bike. A big sip of a hot drink, like coffee or tea, can help stimulate blood circulation, boosting metabolism and providing an overall feeling of warmth. 

 

Tip 6: Protect Your Skin

Unlike your lightest summer jersey or deepest winter jacket, sunscreen is a year-round necessity. UVA rays are present every month of the year—and UVB rays intensify at high altitudes and on sunny, snowy rides. Be sure to apply sunscreen to any exposed areas—and don’t forget to moisturize. Dry winter air leads to the discomfort caused by dry skin.
